“Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in small electronic devices,” said Paul Melin, Nokia’s general manager for patent licensing. “This action is about protecting the results of such pioneering development.” Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple of Cupertino, Calif., declined to comment.In the last October, Nokia based in Espoo, Finland, sued Apple for infringement of 10 patents and sought back royalties on the 33.7 million iPhones sold since the device’s introduction in 2007.

A similar case happened to Apple last December that it filed a countersuit claiming Nokia’s infringements. In that case, Apple sued Nokia was wrongly using 13 of its patents, while the result was against Apple’s wish.

“Both companies have extensive patent portfolios, so I assume this will remain in the courts for a period of time,” said Shannon Cross, an analyst at Cross Research in Livingston, N.J. “Likely there will be a cross license at some point, but I don’t expect any royalties to be material to Apple’s future.”
